One of the most prescribed supplements in my practice is Probiotics. The benefits of taking a good quality probiotic are numerous. This is especially true during Preconception, Pregnancy, and the Postpartum period.
Probiotics are healthy bacteria that support our gut. The gut microbiome plays an important role in maintaining good health, as it houses 70% of our immune system known as GALT (gut-associated lymhoid tissue).
What are the Benefits of Probiotics Before, During & After Pregnancy?
1. PRECONCEPTION. Taking a proper probiotic during the preconception period is important to support healthy immune function, particularly in women who have autoimmune conditions that can affect fertility. These conditions include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, celiac disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis or crohn’s, or allergies and asthma to name a few.
2. PREGNANCY. The protective role of probiotics has been found. It may protect against pregnancy complicaitons like preeclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus, vaginal infections, maternal and infant weight gain and allergic diseases. (PMID: 25398206)
3. POSTPARTUM. Probiotics have also been found to prevent symptoms of anxiety and depression postpartum. (PMID: 28943228)
