Top 5 habits to pick up this Holiday Season

The holidays are a much anticipated time of the year.

It is also easy to get carried away with the spirit of the holidays; indulging in delicious food, festive drinks, and celebrating with family, friends, or workplace gatherings. Making healthy choices can be challenging during special occasions as this.

Here are 5 tips for staying healthy while still enjoying the holiday festivities:

  1. Eat mindfully. This is often a tough one to break during the holidays since we usually gather over food and drink. Individuals with underlying chronic health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol may find it especially challenging to make healthy food choices and avoid over-indulging in holiday treats and feasts that are usually high in sugar, salt, and trans fats. Eating smaller, frequent meals with healthy snacks can help curb sugar cravings and keep you feeling full longer. Increasing protein and fibre in your diet is another way that you can help increase the sense of satiety or fullness and prevent overeating or unhealthy snacking.

2, Limit alcohol intake. Opting for lower calorie alcoholic beverages such as wine, vodka, or gin can help keep your caloric intake low and avoid excess sugars. Drinking a glass of water between each alcoholic beverage can help keep you hydrated and less inclined to drink in excess.

3. Get adequate sleep. The holiday season is a time of gathering with friends and family but it is also dreaded cold and flu season. Getting enough sleep helps keep the immune system strong and prevents infection.

 4. Increase exercise. One of the first habits we tend to break during the holidays is falling off an exercise routine. Staying active or moving by going for walks outdoors or in malls, or even doing regular workouts from the comfort of your home can help burn extra calories and keep you feeling physically and mentally good.

  1. Manage stress. The pandemonium of going to malls to buy gifts or procrastinating on shopping for the family, while trying to cross things off your to-do list can add stress to an already busy time. Managing stress levels by going to sleep and eating meals at a regular time and getting some physical activity can help keep your cortisol or stress hormone levels balanced.

Whichever way you celebrate this December, we hope these small steps can be helpful to your overall wellbeing during the holiday season.
