Who sports massage is for
You don't need to be a competitive athlete. If you train regularly and your body is feeling it, this is for you. For long-standing pain from desk work or physical jobs, see deep tissue massage.
- Runners training for a 5K, half or full marathon
- Lifters and gym-goers with tight hips, shoulders or back
- Rec league players: hockey, soccer, basketball, volleyball
- Cyclists, paddlers and swimmers with overuse tightness
- Anyone returning from a strain, sprain or overuse injury
- Recurring issues like plantar fasciitis, shin splints or tight IT bands
When to book: timing matters
The right kind of sports massage depends on where you are in your training. These are general guidelines; your RMT will tailor them to you and your event.
Before an event
Light and loosening
A few days before a race or game. Shorter, lighter work to loosen tight areas without leaving you sore. Avoid deep work right before competing.
After an event
Recovery-focused
Once the initial soreness eases, usually a day or more after. Gentle work to ease tightness and help you get back to training.
During training
Regular maintenance
Every few weeks during a training block to catch tightness before it becomes an injury and to keep your range of motion.
After an injury
Return to sport
Part of a plan to get you back safely, often alongside chiropractic care or shockwave therapy for tendon problems.
Tell us before your session if…
Deep pressure isn't right for everyone. Your RMT will adapt treatment or suggest a gentler option if any of these apply.
- You take blood thinners or bruise easily
- You have osteoporosis or a recent fracture
- You've had recent surgery or a new injury
- You have varicose veins or a history of blood clots
- You are pregnant: see Prenatal Massage

Sports massage questions
How close to a race or game should I book?
For a lighter pre-event session, a few days before usually works best. Avoid deep work in the day or two before you compete, because it can leave you sore. Your RMT will help you plan around your event date.
Is sports massage the same as deep tissue?
They overlap, but the focus is different. Sports massage is organized around your activity and training schedule, and its pressure changes with timing. Deep tissue focuses on chronic tension from daily life.
Can sports massage prevent injuries?
No massage can guarantee that, but regular sessions can help you spot and manage tightness and imbalances early, before they turn into a problem that stops your training.
Can I come in with a current injury?
Yes. Tell us what happened when you book. Your RMT will assess it and adjust treatment, and may suggest seeing our chiropractor too if the injury needs it.
Do I need to be an athlete?
Not at all. If you exercise regularly and want help with recovery or keeping tightness under control, sports massage is a good fit.
