Summer is coming to an end but are you experiencing hot flashes?  Are you still running your air conditioner to get relief?  Unfortunately, it can happen and may cause a lot of stress to the body. At Brightpath Health and Wellness, we have helped many patients and offered them solutions for hot flashes.  We are confident we can help you overcome it too! The key is to find the root cause of hot flashes and address it. Here are some tips that can help you stay cool:

Avoid Triggers

Some form of stress often triggers hot flashes. It can be anything your body doesn’t agree with or can’t handle. The common culprits are spicy food, warm or hot drinks, alcohol, sauna, and hot baths. It is a good idea to avoid these common food triggers. Here are some tips that can help:

  • Avoid fried, hot, and spicy foods; stick with cool and refreshing salads instead. They will help control your body temperature and ensure you’re comfortable. You’ll be less likely to experience any hot flashes or digestion problems.
  • Drink water and cold beverages and avoid hot drinks as much as you can. Don’t go overboard with cold sweet drinks because they’re not healthy and can cause digestion problems down the line. Cool water is the best way to remain hydrated and avoid hot flashes.
  • A cool shower after exercising or when you get home from work can help to cool down your body as well. You will feel more refreshed and less tired after a soothing bath.

Hot flashes might still happen even if you successfully manage to avoid all of these triggers. It is one of the most common menopausal symptoms. However, avoiding triggers can be an easy solution for hot flashes that can reduce the frequency of their occurrence.

Manage Weight

Overweight and obese individuals may be more prone to hot flashes, especially if they’re exhausted. Individuals who tend to be overweight may experience more hot flashes. A good start to combat hot flashes could be starting an exercise program to help you manage your weight.  You could join an exercise class at your local community centre or try out a new workout video at home.   Secondly, a Naturopathic Doctor could help you with creating a meal plan suitable for you.   Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Start slow and build up your exercise routine over time. Your body won’t be able to go from 0 to 60 without any preparation. Start with walking, mild stretches, and light weights before slowly adding resistance.
  • Exercise isn’t enough; you need to pair it with a healthy diet. There are hundreds of diets available, but all may not be the right choice for you.  Our Naturopathic Doctor can help you find the proper diet that will help with weight loss and ensure you don’t get night sweats.
  • Remain consistent and don’t give up on your weight loss goals. You will experience improvement over time, and eventually, the hot flashes will go away.

A good exercise and diet routine will positively influence many aspects of your lifestyle. You’ll be more confident, happy, and healthy, which will help you avoid many severe ailments down the line. If you maintain a healthy lifestyle, you might even be able to prevent hot flashes and similar symptoms during menopause.

Address Hormonal Imbalances

Hormonal imbalance is one of the most common causes of hot flashes, especially in patients in the perimenopause stage. This can lead to hot flashes, weight problems, health concerns, lack of energy, and several other such issues. Around 75% of the perimenopausal women experience hot flashes, and over 30% of them feel that these impact their quality of life significantly. Serious incidences can happen 4 to 5 times in an hour or around 30 times a day, which can cause a lot of stress. Fluctuations in estrogen levels often cause hot flashes. It can affect the area of the brain that regulates temperature, which leads to flashes.

Fortunately, there are ways to manage hormonal imbalance and get back on track with your health. It might require lifestyle changes, dietary changes, exercise, medicines, and even natural remedies.

If you experience menopausal symptoms, it is a good idea to consult a Naturopathic Doctor for help. They won’t just recommend the best lifestyle changes, but will also provide mental support. We have worked with several middle-aged women and understand their physiology well. Our experts will take the time to understand your medical history and recommend treatments that work. A healthy and active lifestyle can mitigate many symptoms of menopause, including flashes.
